How to write a query letter

I scanned a handout from a Chicago literary agency that gives tips on how to write an effective query letter -- what to do and what not to do. Some of the information is specific to the agency but most of the advice can be applied to query letters in general.

The agency stressed that a query letter should specifically address the target market for the book -- where it will fit in a bookstore, what other books are similar, and who will buy your book.

The agent also said its very important to describe the style of your writing. This is especially true for fiction, as publishers are looking for a writer with a unique voice.
