If you're looking to publish your work and you're just starting out, people often advise buying a copy of Writers Market and sending out your work to magazines and journals listed there. But those outlets receive a huge number of submissions because they're listed in Writers Market. So you can be up against long odds, especially if you're a new writer and you've not published anything before.

As an alternative, I recommend trying the International Directory of Little Magazines and Small Presses instead. It doesn't have a catchy name, but it does have a huge number of listings for places that are off-the-beaten-path. You can buy the directory at Dustbooks.com. I used it to get my first publication credits many years ago, and it's a great feeling to have someone like your work enough to put it in their publication.
